I've Got Friends

from Voices & Vices Volume IV by Jonathan Atkins

/

lyrics

I’ve got friends,

And I’m trying not to keep that as an understatement,
But I will never understand how they state things so clearly.
How they hold on to every word they meant,
As though angels are right there over there shoulders,
Spreading their wings, ready to bring wrath at any moment,
If the slightest verb was dishonest.

The words they speak compliment the underlying tone,
And I will never understand how fucking beautiful they are,
And every breath they encounter speaks wisdom of unknown,
While, even though they have no clue, it feels like they’ve known,

And when I think of the angels hiding devilishly behind them,
I think of the wings each and every one of them deserve and have grown.

about

Jonathan Atkins Mississauga, Ontario

"A singer-songwriter with a devastating ear for harmonies and a delicate touch with lyrics that slide perfectly into a horrid winter. There's a definite Celtic touch, but far sweeter than something like Mumford & Sons." - Andrew Fifield (Metro News)
